Economic & cultural relations between India & France date back to year 1998
The strategic partnership launched in 1998 symbolised a pivotal moment in the
evolution of Indo-French relations, signifying a shared commitment to deepen
cooperation across various sectors. Over the course of 25 years, this partnership has
flourished, propelled by a foundation of mutual respect and trust, fostering
collaborations in diplomacy, trade, defence, technology, and culture.
Currently, over 150 Indian enterprises operate in France, through joint ventures and
acquisitions, collectively employing approximately 7,000 individuals.
Key Indian companies, especially in automotive and aeronautics, have various
operational sites in France. For instance, a leading manufacturer in automotive and
transportation components owns eight sites, making it the top Indian employer in
France. Other Indian firms in sectors like hydraulic equipment, biotechnology, and IT
have also set up operations in the country.
In 2023, France and India commemorated 25 years of their strategic partnership.
During the visit of Prime Minister N. Modi to France on July 13 and 14, 2023, a
significant milestone was achieved as both nations adopted a comprehensive
roadmap. This roadmap serves as a strategic guide, delineating the path of the
bilateral relationship between France and India until the monumental year of 2047,
which aligns with the centenary of India’s independence.
This roadmap reflects the shared vision of both nations in navigating the complex
geopolitical landscape and addressing global challenges together. By setting clear
objectives and timelines, it provides a framework for sustained engagement and
progress, ensuring that the strategic partnership continues to thrive and evolve over
the coming decades.
On January 26, 2024, President Macron was the esteemed guest of Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, coinciding with the anniversary of India’s Constitution coming into
effect in 1950. His presence highlighted the enduring friendship between France and
India, strengthening their partnership further.
